Christopher Bloch is a senior associate in the International Arbitration practice who focuses on representing clients in international commercial and investment arbitrations across industries, including energy, mining, defense, and telecommunications and under all of the major arbitral rules (SIAC, ICC, HKIAC, CIETAC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, and ICSID). With more than 18 years in Asia, Christopher has been recognised in various legal directories as a “Rising Star” in international arbitration and has been described by clients as “hard-working”, “very diligent”, and being “someone you want on your side”. 

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells, Christopher has spent over a decade working as counsel in international arbitrations as well as being appointed as tribunal secretary in the chambers of one of the foremost independent arbitrators in Asia and as a senior member of the SIAC Secretariat where he administered over 250 arbitrations and assisted in drafting the 2016 SIAC Rules and 2017 SIAC Investment Arbitration Rules.  He served on the Young ICCA Task Force on Use and Appointment of Arbitral Secretaries and the CIArb Working Group on Third-Party Funding and is a member of the training faculty for tribunal secretaries at the THAC.  He regularly publishes and speaks on current topics in the space.

Representative experience

Advises LNG companies and utilities to develop pre-dispute and price renegotiation strategies as well as gas price review arbitrations, including one of the first to reach final award in Asia.

Secured a US$490M SIAC award for investors against an Indian multinational for breaches of non-disclosure, non-circumvention and good faith in a Russian coal project; defending the award in the SICC.*

Represented a North American defense contractor in a series of UNCITRAL and ICC arbitrations (~US$300M) on claims of force majeure in a national telecommunications satellite program in Eastern Europe.*

Acted for a state-owned entity in an UNCITRAL arbitration related to an offshore oil & gas field worth over US$140B, including claims of delay, cost recovery, corruption, and environmental breaches.*

Acted for an Omani defense contractor in an ICC arbitration (~US$50M) over the wrongful termination of long-term defense logistics/support contract for the armed forces of a Middle Eastern country. *

Represented a European contractor in negotiations over claims arising from a construction all risks (“CAR”) insurance policy covering the construction of an offshore wind project in North Asia.*

Secured a US$30M SIAC award for a Japanese JV related to the development of a hospital at a remote mining project in Central Asia; advised on enforcement and challenge proceedings in national courts.*

Defended a Japanese LNG trader against claims of missed cargo deliveries and dispute over force majeure for gas delivered from the Freeport LNG plant in the US.*

Represented the South Asian subsidiary of a US renewables company in an ICC arbitration (>US$200M) related to a large-scale solar project impacted by a humanitarian crisis and force majeure.*

Coordinated local counsel in various litigations in support of arbitrations, including in the Singapore International Commercial Court, Singapore High Court, and other national courts.*
