Dr. Michael Bowien cuts through the complexity of European and German financial regulation — giving fintech companies, payment service providers, and financial institutions the clarity they need to move fast and stay compliant.

Michael advises on AML/KYC frameworks under AMLR, GwG, and MaRisk, payment services regulation under PSD2 and PSD3, e-money licensing, and MiFID/MiFIR. He guides clients through regulatory authorisation processes, helps structure new financial products for market entry, and builds internal compliance and governance frameworks designed to withstand regulatory scrutiny. Working alongside Hogan Lovells' global finance team, he draws on the firm's full international reach to deliver practical, cross-border solutions.

Based in Hong Kong, he works closely with the firm's Frankfurt Financial Services team to advise clients across EU, UK, and German regulatory frameworks. Qualified as a German Rechtsanwalt and admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales, he is equally at home in both legal traditions.

Prior to joining Hogan Lovells in 2019, Michael worked at another international law firm and served as in-house legal counsel at a major asset manager, where he focused on European banking supervisory law (Aufsichtsrecht).
